At Your Cervix just posted about a warning issued recently that a particular type of EFM machine may be prone to inaccuracies. Even though it’s just a few models, and your hospital may not use them, all of these machines may have times of inaccuracy. As AYC said in a comment, “A fetal monitor can pick up a multitude of sounds — after all, it’s just ultrasound waves, bouncing off of whatever it hits. You can detect the fetal heart beat, placental blood flow, placental sounds, maternal heart rate (maternal blood vessels run right through the torso), fetal hiccups, perhaps even maternal bowel sounds (theoretically). It’s a seasoned nurse who knows how to tell what is what.” Just something to keep in mind.
